Seoul (UPI): The Korea High-Speed Rail Construction Authority
and the builders of the French high-speed Tgv train have signed a
formal contract on a D2.1 billion project linking Seoul and Pusan
with a 267 mile (430 km) bullet-train system by 2002.
Under the contract signed Tuesday, Gec-Alsthom, the British-
French consortium that gave birth to Tgv, will build the rolling
stock, tracks and signal systems for the Seoul-Pusan high-speed
train system to be partly operational by 2000.
Eventually the contract will lead to 46 fast-speed trains each
composed of 20 coaches pulled by two locomotives and capable of
carrying 1,035 passengers with a maximum commercial operation
speed of 186 miles (300 km) per hour.
