JAKARTA — The Indonesian Army’s Special Forces Command (Kopassus) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of First Lieutenant Jihad Ahmad Al Rasyid, who died from gunshot wounds. Kopassus Information Chief Colonel Indra Mardianto said in Jakarta on Monday (26 October 2026) that the soldier was not shot by another member of the Indonesian military, contrary to reports circulating on social media.

“The incident happened in the armoury when a pistol went off. It was purely due to negligence and an accident,” Indra said when contacted.

Indra said the incident occurred in Surakarta, Central Java, at noon on Saturday (24 October 2026). He added that the entire sequence of events had been recorded by CCTV cameras installed at the site.

The CCTV footage will be handed to the Military Police for further investigation.

“We will hand over the footage so that Military Police investigators can clarify what happened next in the case. It is scheduled to be handed over tomorrow,” he said.

The body of the officer, who served as an assistant company commander in Kopassus Group 26, arrived in Sorong, Southwest Papua, for a lying-in-state on Sunday (25 October 2026).

Earlier, claims circulated on social media that he had been shot dead by a fellow member of the Indonesian military. One Instagram account that posted the claim was @srikandi_indonesiaid.
