Kontras Reveals Andrie Yunus's Condition is Gradually Improving in Hospital

The Head of the Impunity Monitoring Division of Kontras, Jane Rosalina, provided the latest update on the condition of Kontras Deputy Coordinator, Andrie Yunus. After being critical, Andrie is now reported to be improving and is undergoing intensive treatment in the High Care Unit (HCU) at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), Jakarta.

Based on the initial diagnosis in the emergency department, Andrie was said to have burns covering up to 24%. However, after thorough observation by the responsible doctors, this was revised to 20% of the body area, plus degree 3 chemical trauma to the right eye.

“We are fortunate that Andrie’s condition has improved and he has been handled very well by the doctors and hospital staff on duty,” Jane said during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday (18/3).

Jane explained that the attack had caused a decline in vision and significant corneal damage. The medical team has performed cleaning of damaged tissue and transplantation of amniotic membrane (TMA) to protect the surface of Andrie’s eye.

In addition to eye treatment, on Tuesday (17/3), Andrie underwent a procedure to remove dead skin tissue and skin grafting on the face. However, recovery is not yet complete.

“On the neck, chest, and right arm areas, there are still quite deep wounds, so skin grafting cannot yet be done. Surgical procedures may need to be performed more than once,” Jane added.

For security and patient privacy reasons, Kontras and the family have emphasised a ban on visits from any parties so that Andrie can focus on a comprehensive recovery process.

On the legal front, a surprising development has emerged. The TNI Military Police Centre (Puspom) has officially detained four TNI personnel strongly suspected of involvement in the acid splashing incident.

The four suspects, now held at Puspom TNI, are members serving in the Headquarters Detachment of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (Denma BAIS). They are initialled NDP, SL, BWH, and ES.

“So, now these four suspected suspects have been secured at Puspom TNI for further investigation to the level of formal inquiry,” stated the Commander of Puspom TNI, Major General TNI Yusri Nuryanto.

To date, Puspom TNI is still probing the motive behind the attack on the human rights activist, as intensive examinations are ongoing.
