KontraS Calls for Establishment of Independent Team to Investigate Andrie Yunus Case

Jakarta, VIVA – Coordinator of KontraS’s Working Body, Dimas Bagus Arya, has pushed for the DPR’s Commission III to issue a political decision in the form of establishing an independent Joint Fact-Finding Team (TGPF) to thoroughly investigate the acid attack case against Andrie Yunus.

Dimas assessed that forming an independent team is crucial to overcome the legal formalities and political obstacles shadowing the resolution of the case.

This was stated by Dimas during a hearing with opinions (RDP) at the DPR’s Commission III, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 31 March 2026.

“We also request that this forum (DPR’s Commission III) can push the President to issue a political decision, namely forming a joint fact-finding team. What is the reason? First, we see two obstacles here. Legal formal obstacles, political obstacles,” said Dimas.

He added that the incident befalling Andrie is not merely a personal attack but a real threat to human rights defence efforts and the quality of democracy in Indonesia.

He expressed concern over a potential domino effect of similar repression against civil society with critical views in the future.

“In this case, the victim’s factor is not just Andrie Yunus. We argue that the threat to Andrie Yunus, the attack on Andrie Yunus, could also become a domino effect moving forward. That public works, human rights defence efforts, works to improve the quality of democracy will still face attacks, intimidation, and repression from parties who may never share the same mindset as civil society,” Dimas stressed.

KontraS hopes that the DPR’s Commission III can produce strong recommendations for the formation of a TGPF involving experts, law enforcement apparatus, and civil society elements. This team is expected to reveal the case clearly, including dragging in the intellectual actors behind the scenes.

“So we request that this forum can also emphasise or produce a political decision to create an independent joint fact-finding team consisting of several experts, several law enforcement organs, and also civil society so that it can dismantle it clearly,” said Dimas.
