JAKARTA — The condition of the right eye of Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), was said to have been concerning after he was doused with caustic liquid by an unknown individual on 12 March 2026.

The medical team found leakage of caustic liquid that caused Andrie’s eyeball wall to melt before he underwent further surgery.

KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya stated that, based on information from the medical team at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), the leakage was discovered before the third surgery was performed.

According to Dimas, the leakage caused Andrie’s eyeball wall to melt. To anticipate a worse condition, the medical team carried out various treatments to prevent the liquid from spreading to the retina.

He added that this condition occurred before the third surgery. Currently, Andrie has completed his fifth surgery.

The KontraS team is also requesting the results of the examination from the National Police’s Forensic Laboratory Centre (Puslabfor) regarding the liquid used in the dousing. They suspect a mixture of different substances in the liquid.

“We will soon issue an official release once we receive confirmation. We are also awaiting a response from the National Police’s Puslabfor,” Dimas said.

Nevertheless, Andrie’s overall health condition is said to be improving. He can now interact with family and the KontraS team, although he is still undergoing intensive care.

“But because he is still under intensive care, he cannot yet communicate with parties other than family and KontraS,” Dimas explained.

He elaborated that from the initial diagnosis of 20 percent burns, almost the entire affected skin area has been cleaned and operated on. The injured areas were then treated using skin graft methods from other parts of the body.

“The skin surgery has been successfully handled, and now it is in the recovery and self-regeneration stage. The progress is quite good,” Dimas revealed.

“Andrie is already stable, can speak, and has conveyed messages. Essentially, Andrie advises that we must not be defeated by fear of terror from cowardly individuals,” he added.
