KontraS Activist Andrie Yunus Victim of Acid Attack

Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS), was attacked with corrosive acid in the Central Jakarta area on Thursday, 12 March in the evening.

KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya reported that the incident occurred after Andrie Yunus attended a podcast event titled “Remilitarisation and Judicial Review in Indonesia” at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), at approximately 23:00 WIB.

“He suffered an attack involving the pouring of corrosive acid by an Unknown Person (OTK), which resulted in serious injuries across his entire body, particularly to both hands, face, chest, and eye area,” he stated in a written statement on Friday, 13 March.

Dimas said that as a result of the incident, Andrie was immediately taken to hospital for medical treatment. He reported that following examination, Andrie sustained burns covering 24 per cent of his body.

According to the chronology of events, Dimas said the incident began when Andrie was riding his motorcycle on Jalan Salemba I – Talang in Central Jakarta. At that point, two perpetrators approached him whilst travelling against traffic on Jalan Talang (Talang Bridge) riding a two-wheeled vehicle, believed to be a Honda Beat automatic motorcycle from 2016 to 2021.

“The perpetrators were two men who carried out the operation using a single motorcycle, with each assuming the role of driver and passenger,” he said.

Meanwhile, Head of Public Relations for the Metro Jaya Regional Police (Polda), Police Colonel Budi Hermanto, said police were continuing to investigate the case.

“The Criminal Investigation Unit (Sat Reskrim) of Central Jakarta Metro Police is currently investigating the witnesses and the scene,” Budi said.

In a separate statement, Criminal Investigation Head of Central Jakarta Metro Police, Deputy Police Colonel Robby Hefados, confirmed the incident.

“The incident is confirmed; an official report from the victim has not yet been filed, but we are conducting an investigation to determine the identity of the perpetrators through scientific investigation methods,” Robby said.
