KontraS Activist Andrie Yunus Undergoes Seven Surgeries After Acid Attack
KontraS staff member Dimas Bagus Arya has revealed the current condition of KontraS Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus, who was the victim of an acid attack and an alleged premeditated murder attempt on 12 March 2026.
Dimas stated that 156 days, or exactly five months, after the tragic incident, Andrie is still facing a long recovery process. He is even scheduled to undergo another major operation at the end of August 2026.
“It has been 156 days, or tomorrow it will be exactly five months since Andrie was targeted in an alleged premeditated murder attempt by a state defence apparatus, namely a member of Bais TNI,” said Dimas at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (13/8).
Based on the initial diagnosis, Andrie suffered burns to 24 per cent of his body and damage to 44 per cent of the cornea of his right eye. To date, Andrie has undergone seven major operations, consisting of three eye operations and four skin operations.
Serious problems still overshadow Andrie’s vision. Exposure to acid caused damage to his corneal cells, which at one point left him able only to perceive light without being able to identify objects or large letters.
Nevertheless, the medical team found a positive sign because the acid seepage did not damage the pupil. This provides an opportunity to preserve his visual function and minimise the risk of permanent blindness.
In addition to his eyes, Andrie also faces the threat of scar tissue that could potentially cause keloids and contractures (shortening of muscle tissue). This condition can impair motor function, especially in parts of the body that move actively.
“The neck area still often experiences contractures. He has been fitted with a device called a Pressure Garment,” explained Dimas. The device helps with skin recovery and reduces the appearance of scars through reconstructive procedures.
From a psychological perspective, the medical team in the military trial in June 2026 revealed that Andrie is suffering from severe anxiety. Dimas believes this condition is exacerbated by the uncertainty surrounding the resolution of the legal case.
“This condition is related to the uncertain process of resolving the case, including when Andrie is still required to appear as a victim witness in the military trial,” he added.
At present, Andrie is no longer hospitalised but continues to receive intensive outpatient care at RSCM. He still has to undergo regular check-ups and physiotherapy to restore motor function, and is preparing for another major operation at the end of this month.
