KontraS Activist Andrie Yunus Undergoes Further Eye Surgery and Plastic Surgery
The National Central General Hospital Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM) has revealed the latest condition of Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS).
During the past three days of treatment, the RSCM medical team discovered a recurrence of ischaemia (reduced blood flow) in the inferior area of the right eye’s sclera, affecting around 40%, which has caused thinning of the surrounding tissue.
RSCM’s Head of Public Relations, Yoga Nara, stated that based on this evaluation, the medical team decided to proceed with further interventions to preserve the tissue condition and support the healing process. Yoga disclosed that Andrie underwent surgery involving a team of eye specialists and plastic surgeons in the Kencana operating theatre on 25 March 2026 at 10:00 WIB.
“In this procedure, the eye team performed tissue relocation from the inner eye area to cover the exposed region, attachment of an amnion membrane, and reinstallation of the eye protective lens,” Yoga said in a written statement to Tempo on 26 March 2026.
Yoga explained that the procedure aims to repair the eye’s surface and support more optimal tissue healing. During the operation, the medical team also identified progressive thinning of the corneal tissue in the upper to outer side of the right cornea, resulting from ongoing inflammation.
To address this, the eye specialists applied an additional amnion membrane and temporary suturing of the right eyelid to protect the eye surface and maximise tissue recovery.
Meanwhile, the plastic surgery team conducted further debridement of dead tissue and skin grafting on the eye, chest, and shoulder areas as part of efforts to accelerate burn wound healing. Further evaluation of the wound condition is scheduled for Saturday, 28 March 2026.
Yoga stated that the primary focus of treatment is now to maintain the integrity of the right eyeball and control the inflammation process to prevent further progression. He noted that the patient’s overall condition remains under close monitoring by a multidisciplinary medical team with comprehensive care.
“RSCM is committed to providing optimal, professional medical treatment prioritising patient safety. We urge the public to remain calm and place their trust in the medical team handling this case,” Yoga said.
Andrie was doused with acid by two unidentified individuals on Thursday night, 12 March 2026, at around 23:37 WIB on Jalan Salemba I Talang, Central Jakarta. He arrived at RSCM’s Emergency Department in the early hours of Friday, 13 March 2026, around midnight, complaining of burns to his face, neck, chest, back, and both arms, accompanied by vision impairment in his right eye.
The corrosive liquid caused Andrie Yunus to suffer burns to 24% of his body.
