Kontras Activist Andrie Yunus Placed Under Emergency Protection by LPSK
Jakarta — Andrie Yunus, a Kontras activist who was attacked with caustic soda, is currently under the protection of the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK). Deputy Head of LPSK Sri Suparyati stated that Andrie’s protection status is emergency in nature.
Since Saturday 14 March 2026, LPSK has provided physical protection by deploying LPSK personnel to safeguard Andrie, who remains under intensive care at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Jakarta.
Sri explained that the family of Andrie submitted a protection application on Friday 13 March 2026. “In the application, the victim’s family requested several protection service programmes including the fulfilment of procedural rights, physical protection in the form of close security, and medical assistance,” said Sri on Sunday 15 March 2026. After completing procedural steps, LPSK decided to place Andrie under protection.
“The Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) is providing emergency protection to Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras) Andrie Yunus, who was attacked with caustic soda by unknown assailants,” said Sri. The protection measures implemented by LPSK for Andrie have included ensuring medical treatment and meeting medical needs.
Moreover, said Sri, communication with Kontras and the family agreed with the deployment of LPSK personnel to provide close physical protection for Andrie.
“This emergency protection aims to provide a sense of security for Andrie Yunus as a victim, immediately following the incident. LPSK has implemented emergency protection measures including mentoring, close protection and monitoring, and medical assistance for the victim who is currently receiving treatment at RSCM,” said Sri.
Regarding other protection rights, Sri said LPSK also provides assurance for Andrie regarding the promotion of law enforcement and legal processes. LPSK is calling on law enforcement agencies (APH), particularly the National Police, to swiftly conduct investigations and inquiries to identify the perpetrators and the intellectual actors behind the caustic soda attack.
“LPSK believes that identifying the perpetrators and the principal actors behind the attack must be carried out swiftly and thoroughly in the interests of the nation to deliver a sense of justice for the victim,” said Sri.
Andrie Yunus is the deputy coordinator of Kontras. On Thursday evening 12 March 2026, he was attacked with caustic soda. The incident occurred after Andrie Yunus returned from speaking on a podcast at the Law Aid Foundation (YLBHI) office in central Jakarta.
As Andrie Yunus was travelling home on his motorcycle in the Salemba area, specifically on Jalan Talang, two assailants on a motorcycle were waiting for Andrie Yunus to pass.
From CCTV footage secured as evidence of the incident by the Kontras team, the attack occurred at approximately 23:00 local time. The footage showed two individuals spraying caustic soda at Andrie Yunus’s face, who was wearing a jacket and helmet.
Andrie Yunus fell from his motorcycle and was recorded running whilst screaming in pain. Andrie Yunus suffered 24 per cent burns across his body. The caustic soda reached both his right and left hands, his front face, chest area, and eyes.
