KONI to have smart new home

JAKARTA (JP): The management of the Senayan sports complex revealed yesterday a gigantic plan to build a 50-story skyscraper above the lot which now accommodates the National Sports Council office.

A source at the board who requested anonymity told The Jakarta Post yesterday that the construction project of the new skyscraper, to be named Gelora Senayan Tower, will start after Idul Fitri holidays.

"The new tower will take over from BNI City as the highest building," he said. The 46-story BNI City, situated on Jl. Jendral Sudirman, Central Jakarta, is now under completion. It stands 288.85 meters tall.

The source said that it would take the board two years to complete the new tower. However, he refused to disclose how much the mega project would cost the board. "The project will be run by a private company," he said.

He said that the idea of the construction project came from Minister/State Secretary Moerdiono.

Moerdiono said upon dedicating the new office building of the board on Jan. 19 that the council would be housed in a new building, but has to share it with private companies.

Moerdiono said the council will be temporarily accommodated at the board's office during the construction project.

The board works under the State Secretary's supervision. Moerdiono is the ex-officio chairman of the Gelora Senayan Foundation which was set up by the government to control land use at the sports complex.

In a related development, chairman of the National Sports Council Wismoyo Arismunandar told members of the House of Representatives' commission on education, culture, religion and sports that the council would ask the government to give it the rights over its office building as well as the plot.

"I don't know who owns the building, but we consider it ours," he said.

Wismoyo said that control of the new building will give the council a lot of money for national sports development. "We'll raise at least Rp 3 billion (US$1.3 million) every month from the private companies which lease the building," he said.

Wismoyo said that the council has draw up a proposal on the construction of the building to be presented to Moerdiono.

"I will discuss it with the minister in the near future," he said. (05)
