KONI set to induct new volleyball leaders today
JAKARTA (JP): The secrecy which has overshadowed the
negotiations on who will take the top jobs at the Indonesian
Volleyball Association will end only when chairman of the
National Sports Council (KONI) Wismoyo Arismunandar swears in
them today.
Officials at the council announced the induction yesterday,
but they were tightlipped about the line-up of the new leadership
board of the volleyball body.
"I know nothing about who gets what in the new leadership
board, neither do the journalists," the association's outgoing
secretary-general M. Solii said yesterday. "Everything is kept
secret before the induction. Let's just wait and see."
The association concluded its national congress three weeks
ago with a unanimous decision to name Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana the
single elector for the new cabinet.
No official word has been said so far by President Soeharto's
eldest daughter about whether she is willing to take the
association's mantle in place of Kunarto.
Kunarto, who is vice chairman of the Supreme Audit Agency,
declined a second four-year term due to the agency's ruling which
bars any official's involvement in an organization which receives
state funds.
Solii said that Mrs. Rukmana had asked Kunarto and Rita
Subowo, chairperson of the Indonesian Beach Volleyball
Association, to share ideas during discussions held over the past
three weeks.
"We have heard nothing from the run-up of the negotiations,"
Solii said.
Solii said that it was the first time in the association's
history that the electorate team has kept everything secret.
"There could be some surprises or not today, who knows," Solii
said.
Kunarto was the first to disclose his support for Mrs. Rukmana
for the association's top job. He also suggested in the recent
national congress that all participants support her nomination.
