Commissioner of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), Choirul Anam, has expressed regret over the alleged act of violence by a senior towards a junior that resulted in the death of Bripda Natanael Simanungkalit within the Riau Islands Provincial Police (Polda Kepri) environment.

According to Anam, acts of violence within the police institution cannot be justified for any reason, as mechanisms for mentoring and enforcing discipline are already in place.

“First and foremost, we regret that act of violence. Whatever the reason, there are actually mechanisms in place. Mechanisms for reprimands and so on. That’s the first point,” Anam told reporters on Wednesday (15/4/2026).

Kompolnas is urging that the case be handled comprehensively through two channels, namely internal ethical examinations and criminal proceedings.

This step is deemed important to ensure that similar incidents do not recur in the future.

Anam also views the steps taken by the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the National Police (Polri) as positive, particularly in transparently uncovering the incident.

He appreciates the rapid internal police response, including the ongoing legal processes against the alleged perpetrators.

According to him, these efforts demonstrate the institution’s commitment to addressing violations, even when they involve its own members.

“We also view the positive steps taken by our colleagues in the internal police, especially Propam, which has already taken measures to ensure the transparency of the incident, including the ongoing criminal proceedings. This is a positive step,” he stated.

In addition to enforcement, Kompolnas emphasises the importance of strengthening internal oversight systems and preventive mechanisms within the Polri.

Anam said that oversight needs to be conducted regularly as well as through surprise inspections to prevent various forms of violations.

“The importance of all ongoing internal oversight efforts and building preventive mechanisms,” he explained.

According to him, several preventive initiatives have actually begun to be designed, but they need to be strengthened to operate effectively.

Previously reported, the case of Bripda Natanael Simanungkalit’s death occurred at the Riau Islands Provincial Police Young Non-Commissioned Officer Mess on Monday (13/4/2026) night.
