Kompolnas Explains Why Strengthening Its Institution is Crucial in Police Law Revision
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Kompolnas Commissioner Choirul Anam explained why strengthening his institution in the revision of Police Law No. 2 of 2002, currently being discussed by the DPR and government, is crucial.
According to Anam, strengthening Kompolnas is necessary to maintain police professionalism and meet public expectations regarding police oversight.
“The importance of strengthening Kompolnas is primarily to uphold police professionalism and address the broader public’s expectations,” Anam told Kompas.com on Tuesday (26 May 2026).
Anam noted that the strengthening of Kompolnas had previously been recommended by a presidential reform commission, and the recommendation was accepted by the President.
“Therefore, we remind and hope that the Kompolnas strengthening outlined by the reform commission and accepted by the President becomes a key point in the draft law,” he said.
He also emphasised that Kompolnas is directly accountable to the President, making institutional strengthening relevant to police reform efforts.
“We hope Kompolnas strengthening is included comprehensively, fully incorporating the recommendations from the reform commission accepted by the President,” Anam said.
Chairman of the DPR’s Third Commission and Working Committee Head Habiburokhman stated there are seven main points in the Police Law revision.
One of the points to be revised is the strengthening of Kompolnas’s duties, functions, and position.
