JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The Commission for Accelerating Police Reform (KPRP) has recommended strengthening the authority of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas). In the future, the institution will become an independent body tasked with overseeing the police. Furthermore, Kompolnas will serve as an external overseer of the police. This strengthening of Kompolnas’s authority indicates that the body is being elevated from its previous powers. The enhancement has a significant impact on Kompolnas, including recommendations that will become binding in nature. “The President strongly approves the strengthening of Kompolnas, the National Police Commission of the Republic of Indonesia, so that its decisions and recommendations are binding,” said the Chairman of the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform, Jimly Asshiddiqie. The Minister of Law, Supratman, will soon prepare a draft for the revision of the Police Law to be promptly submitted to Parliament. “It is our collective task to draft it and then submit it to Parliament as an amendment to the current Police Law, specifically certain articles related to Kompolnas,” stated Yusril. This includes revising eight Police Regulations (Perpol) and 24 Chief of Police Regulations, which are expected to be completed by 2029. Secretary of KPRP, Retired Police General Ahmad Dofiri, views the strengthening of Kompolnas as an important step, given its position remaining under the President. In terms of authority, KPRP is proposed not only to play a role in policy formulation and proposing candidates for Chief of Police, but also to expand its supervisory functions.
