The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) has assured that the criminal proceedings against Bripda MS, a member of the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) accused of assault leading to the death of student Arianto Tawakal in Tual, Maluku, will be expedited.

Kompolnas member, Choirul Anam, stated that they have directly coordinated with the Maluku Police and Tual Police to oversee the transition from the ethical investigation to the criminal investigation.

“We have had a dialogue with the Criminal Investigation Unit. There is a strong commitment to use information from the ethical hearing to expedite the criminal proceedings. Currently, the case file is being prepared so that the suspect’s status can be transferred to the prosecutor’s office as soon as possible,” said Anam in a statement on Thursday (February 26).

Anam emphasized that Kompolnas continues to maintain intensive communication with the Chief of the Maluku Police and the Director of the Maluku Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit to ensure that the handling of this case is transparent and accountable. According to him, the sooner this case is brought to court, the better for the sense of justice in the community.

“Our commitment with the Chief of Police and the Police Chief is that the sooner, the better. We want this process to be clear and in accordance with the expectations of the victim’s family,” he added.

On the other hand, Anam also highlighted the social problems in the area where the incident occurred, which are prone to conflict. He urged local government officials not to turn a blind eye and to participate in addressing the root of social problems in the community.

“Preventing incidents like this from recurring is not only the responsibility of the police, but the responsibility of us all. We invite the Mayor, Regent, and even the Governor to be involved in resolving the existing social problems,” Anam said.

Previously, a member of the Brimob, Bripda MS, punched Arianto Tawakal (14 years old), a student at MTS Negeri Maluku Tenggara, to death. The victim’s face was hit by Bripda MS’s tactical helmet, causing injuries to the temple area, and he fell. The victim, AT, was then taken to the Karel Sadsuitubun Regional Hospital, but he could not be saved. AT was pronounced dead at 13:00 WIT.

The Chief of the Maluku Police, Irjen Dadang Hartanto, announced the sanction of Dismissal from Service (PTDH) against Bripda MS after he was found to have committed a serious ethical violation.

The decision to dismiss him was announced directly by the Chief of Police in a press conference, which was also attended by representatives from the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) and senior officials from the Maluku Police.

“The Police do not tolerate any form of ethical violation and violent behavior that undermines the values of professionalism and public trust. The handling of this case is carried out objectively, transparently, and fairly,” said Dadang in a statement on Tuesday (February 24).

Based on the latest communication with the victim’s family, Anam said that the family appreciated the firm action taken by the Police in dismissing the perpetrator. Although they are pleased with the suspect’s status and the acceleration of the case, the family stated that they will continue to monitor the case until a final court decision is reached.

“The family has thanked for the transparent process so far. The main focus now is to ensure that the final outcome in court truly provides the fairest justice for the victim,” he concluded.
