Komnas Perempuan: 'Delayed justice' occurs frequently when wives report violence

Jakarta — The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) says the phenomenon of delayed justice occurs frequently when wives report cases of violence they have suffered to law enforcement authorities.

“Wives, as women facing the legal system, experience ill-treatment and delayed justice; some reports are not processed, then they are asked to withdraw the report, criminalised, or reported back,” said Deputy Chair Ratna Batara Munti at the launch of the Annual Report 2025 in Jakarta on Friday.

She noted that in handling domestic violence cases, a history of violence spanning years is often not taken into account by law enforcement.

“In fact, when the perpetrator reports back against the victim, the victim becomes a woman in conflict with the law, and it is her report that is processed more quickly by the authorities,” Ratna Batara Munti said.

She added that women in siri marriages or mixed marriages are more vulnerable to layered vulnerability when experiencing violence.

In the 2025 Annual Report, Komnas Perempuan said the most common form of violence against women in 2025 was sexual violence, with 22,848 cases.

“The most common form of violence against women in 2025 is sexual violence, with 22,848 cases, followed by psychological violence with 15,727 cases, physical violence 14,126 cases, and economic violence 5,942 cases,” Ratna Batara Munti said.

She also noted that data on violence against women in 2025 increased by 14.07 percent, reaching a total of 376,529 cases.

Meanwhile, the number of complaints of violence against women received by Komnas Perempuan in 2025 rose by 10 percent to 4,597 cases.

In response to these complaints, Komnas Perempuan handled an average of about 19 cases per day.
