Komnas Perempuan Classifies FH UI Sexual Violence Case as Electronic-Based Sexual Violence
The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) has stated that the sexual violence case involving 16 students from the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia (FH UI) falls under the category of Electronic-Based Sexual Violence (KSBE) or Online Gender-Based Violence (KBGO). “Komnas Perempuan affirms that the actions of the perpetrators fall within the category of Electronic-Based Sexual Violence or Online Gender-Based Violence,” said Komnas Perempuan member Devi Rahayu in her statement on Wednesday (15/4/2026). Devi explained that this form of violence is clearly recognised and prohibited under Law No. 12 of 2022 on Sexual Violence Crimes. Therefore, Devi stated that the perpetrators cannot hide behind the excuse of “just joking”, as digital spaces are not law-free zones. “We appreciate the victim’s courage in speaking out and reporting this case to the task force. We urge that this case be handled fully in accordance with the applicable law, not reduced to merely an ethical violation,” she said. KSBE is considered a real threat to the security and comfort of cyberspace, thus categorised as a sexual violence crime under the TPKS Law. Previously reported, 16 University of Indonesia (UI) students are suspected of sexually harassing a female student in the faculty. The alleged harassment went viral on social media in the form of conversations with sexual connotations in a social media group.
