Komnas HAM visits police HQ

JAKARTA: A team from the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) visited the National Police Headquarters on Monday to learn more about how human rights concepts are being applied in the institution.

"We have observed several rights violations by police officers," said Komnas HAM chairman Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara, citing violations in Aceh, Bulukumba in South Sulawesi, and Abepura in Papua provinces.

The commission also complained that few of the rights violation reports were followed up by the police.

"We understand that it will take time for police to fully implement their new paradigm in public service, but it is already a good move that they have incorporated human rights issues in their regulations," Abdul Hakim said.

He said the commission would follow up the meeting by conducting impromptu visits to several police education and training centers in Jakarta, Surabaya, and Semarang.

"We will meet again on March 31 to find a better mechanism for processing rights violation reports," Abdul Hakim said. --JP
