Komnas HAM Urged to Promptly Conclude Andrie Yunus Case to Ensure State Presence
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has been urged to promptly issue a conclusion regarding the acid attack suffered by Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras), to determine whether it qualifies as a human rights violation.
Member of House of Representatives Commission XIII Mafirion stated that Komnas HAM must swiftly provide a firm and accurate conclusion.
“Komnas HAM must not hesitate to promptly conclude the Andrie Yunus case. This is crucial to ensure the state is present and serious in protecting human rights activists,” said Mafirion in his statement on Saturday (28/3/2026).
He assessed that the lack of clarity in Komnas HAM’s stance could weaken efforts to uphold justice and protect human rights defenders in Indonesia.
If Komnas HAM is slow in concluding the matter, according to him, law enforcement could lose a strong human rights-based reference.
Meanwhile, Mafirion continued, the act of throwing acid is not merely an ordinary criminal offence but can strongly be categorised as a human rights violation because it directly deprives the victim’s fundamental rights as a human being.
“This incident clearly violates the right to safe living, the right to be free from torture, and the right to self-protection. This is not just criminality, but falls into the category of human rights violations,” Mafirion stressed.
This PKB politician explained that if this case is not promptly concluded, it will have serious impacts such as weakening the victim’s position and obscuring the motives and intellectual actors.
If that happens, said Mafirion, the potential involvement of certain parties, including the possibility of actors behind the scenes, will be difficult to uncover.
He emphasised that the determination of an incident holds very important and strategic significance.
Mafirion stated that this determination is not merely a label but serves as a legal and moral foundation to ensure more serious, comprehensive, and just handling.
He stressed the importance of such determination to guarantee maximum protection for the victim, including physical, psychological, and social recovery.
Additionally, classifying it as a human rights violation can drive the full revelation of the truth, including the possibility of masterminds or intellectual actors.
