Komnas HAM States Recovery from Andrie Yunus's Burns Will Take Up to 2 Years
The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) has disclosed that the recovery process for Andrie Yunus (AY), Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, following an acid or strong chemical attack, is expected to take a considerable amount of time. Komnas HAM Commissioner Saurlin Siagian explained that the commission has received medical information from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). He stated that the critical phase of surgery and burn recovery for the victim is predicted to last up to two years ahead. He added that a team of specialist doctors is currently providing intensive care for the physical impacts suffered by the activist. “There are several important points from RSCM. The official term that can be used publicly is ‘burns due to being doused with strong acid chemicals’. The focus of recovery will be carried out in these six months,” Saurlin said at RSCM in Central Jakarta on Thursday (26/3/2026). Saurlin noted that tissue damage from strong acid requires ongoing medical intervention. The medical team estimates that the entire series of surgical procedures and total recovery will take quite a long time. “The surgery and overall recovery is estimated to take between six months to two years ahead for the burn recovery,” he added. Regarding the financing of the substantial and long-term medical treatment, Saurlin assured that Andrie Yunus has received state protection. He said that the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) guarantees all treatment and recovery costs for Andrie Yunus. “We have confirmation that the medical handling costs so far are covered by LPSK,” Saurlin stated. The investigation focus is not only on the physical wounds but also on the long-term psychological impacts experienced by Andrie Yunus due to the acid dousing.
