Komnas HAM Seeks Information from TNI on Andrie Yunus Case
The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) summoned Commander of the Military Police Centre Major General Yusri Nuryanto, along with several officers from TNI Headquarters, to seek information on the handling of the acid attack case against activist Andrie Yunus on Wednesday, 1 April 2026.
Komnas HAM posed several questions to Yusri, Head of the TNI Legal Development Agency Rear Admiral Farid Ma’ruf, Deputy Head of the TNI Information Centre Brigadier General Osmar Silalahi, and other mid-level officers.
The main point was to explore what the TNI did before the press conference on 18 March and the determination of the four suspects on 19 March,” said Coordinator of the Human Rights Enforcement Subcommission and Mediation Commissioner of Komnas HAM Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi at the Komnas HAM office today.
In addition to the investigation process, he continued, Komnas HAM also raised questions about suspicions that this case is related to command operations of the soldiers. However, Pramono did not explain the TNI’s responses.
Komnas HAM, he stated, also requested the TNI’s willingness to allow the institution to question the four BAIS soldiers who have been designated as suspects. “From Puspom, they stated openness for us to meet the suspects. This is our effort to encourage transparency in the internal TNI investigation,” said Pramono.
On the same occasion, Monitoring and Investigation Commissioner of Komnas HAM Saurlin P. Siagian said that the institution also asked the TNI to immediately announce the identities of the four suspects to the public and involve external supervisors in handling this case.
Komnas HAM, he said, also hopes that the police investigation process does not stop after the case handover. Because not only Komnas HAM, but the public also hopes this case can be revealed clearly. “We still hope the police conduct a comprehensive, open investigation, not limited to the four suspects alone,” said Saurlin.
After providing statements, the TNI Military Police Centre Commander to the Deputy Head of the TNI Information Centre did not give statements to journalists.
Andrie Yunus was doused with corrosive chemical liquid on 12 March. The liquid thrown by TNI BAIS members damaged and injured the body of the Deputy Coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence.
RSCM Legal Manager and Public Relations Yoga Nara said that in the next week, Andrie will undergo further skin grafting to replace dead skin areas on the back of his neck.
In addition, Yoga recounted that Andrie had just undergone his third right eye surgery on 28 March 2026. During the surgery, the corneal surface was found to be increasingly thinning and there was a leak in the eyeball wall.
