Chairperson of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Anis Hidayah has spoken out regarding the case of Taufik Hidayat (30), who is suspected of abusing and confining a woman with the initials YTR (29) in Bandung. Anis described Taufik Hidayat’s actions as extremely inhumane. “The violence perpetrated by the suspect against the victim is extremely inhumane, cruel, and controlling of the victim’s position. This demonstrates gender-based violence within an unequal relationship pattern,” Anis said when contacted on Thursday (25/6/2026). Anis supports the police in processing Taufik Hidayat according to the applicable law. However, she urged law enforcement to ensure a deterrent effect for the individual concerned. “We certainly support a thorough law enforcement process so that there is a deterrent effect for the perpetrator and the victim receives comprehensive recovery, including medical, psychological, and social support, as well as future reintegration with her family,” she stated. Anis also expressed hope that the Taufik Hidayat case would serve as a lesson for all parties. She hopes the public will become more aware of their surroundings. “I think we all have a moral responsibility to support the victim’s position, to uncover such incidents, and not to remain silent on cases like this. We also hope that the victim’s identity and face are not published vulgarly by the media or social media as a form of protection for the victim,” she said. As is known, Taufik Hidayat has been arrested and named a suspect in the case of confinement and sadistic abuse of his girlfriend, YTR (29), in Bandung, West Java. Taufik’s flight ended in Majalaya after he was hunted by police officers. Taufik has also been detained and named a suspect for his actions. The victim is believed to have suffered physical violence for nearly three years, resulting in serious injuries all over her body. The West Java Regional Police are investigating reports of other victims of Taufik Hidayat. Police are monitoring several social media posts from individuals claiming to have been victims of Taufik Hidayat. “We have received social media posts from parties claiming to be victims. We are open to anyone who feels they are a victim to come forward and report,” said West Java Police Head of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Hendra Rochmawan, as reported by Antara on Wednesday (24/6). However, investigators have not yet received any official reports regarding the alleged existence of other victims in this case. Hendra stated that members of the public who have information or feel they are victims can report through the Directorate of Women and Children Protection and Human Trafficking Eradication (PPA-PPO) of the West Java Police or the National Police call centre 110. Investigators are also still looking into the motive behind Taufik Hidayat’s confinement and abuse of YTR, his ex-girlfriend. Police have not yet been able to conclude the suspect’s motive as the examination and evidence collection are still ongoing.
