Komnas HAM Member: Corruption is a Real Threat to Human Rights Fulfilment
Komnas HAM member Amiruddin Al Rahab has stated that corruption is a real threat to the fulfilment and protection of human rights (HAM). According to him, corruption also hampers the provision of basic services such as education and health.
This was conveyed by Amir during the launch of the Komnas HAM Study on Corruption and the Restoration of Human Rights Violations on Tuesday (21/7/2026). He emphasised that corruption is a serious threat.
“Corruption is one of the real threats to the fulfilment and protection of human rights,” Amir said.
He explained that corruption constitutes a violation of human rights that creates victims. In this regard, citizens’ rights have already been violated.
“All parties must begin to realise that when a corruption offence occurs, citizens’ rights have already been violated. Corruption harms state finances intended to fulfil and protect citizens’ rights,” Amir explained.
Amir also highlighted that discussions regarding the link between the impact of corruption and the fulfilment of human rights are not yet widespread.
“For almost 20 years, we have been busy discussing corruption from a criminal perspective but have not yet entered the realm of human rights. How then can the government adopt that perspective? If we do not realise the problem of corruption to that extent, we will just stop there,” he said.
According to Amir, corruption is an act capable of paralysing the state’s ability to fulfil human rights.
“The Komnas HAM study is important because it does not only discuss corruption from a criminal perspective. It positions corruption as an act that can paralyse the state’s ability to fulfil human rights,” he stated.
Amir considers corruption a serious threat to human rights. Therefore, he believes the human rights aspect needs to be considered as an aggravating factor.
“In the future, can the impact on human rights become an aggravating factor? So that those who intend to commit corruption will think twice. They are a major threat to human rights,” Amir said.
He hopes various parties will pay serious attention to the impact of corruption. He also stressed the importance of placing human rights as the foundation and main principle in governance.
“Hopefully many parties, such as the KPK, the Attorney General’s Office, the National Police and other institutions, will begin to formulate this issue so that human rights are not a peripheral principle, but become the main principle in governance,” he asserted.
