Komnas HAM Issues Human Rights Defender Certificate for Andrie Yunus

Jakarta — The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has issued a certificate confirming that Andrie Yunus, a victim of acid attack, is a human rights defender entitled to state protection.

The certificate, bearing reference number 001/PM.04/HRD/III 2026, was released on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, and immediately handed over to Yunus’s representative.

“Secondly, we have also submitted a protection letter to the National Police so that the person in question receives the necessary protection, dated 17 March 2026,” said Komnas HAM Commissioner Saurlin Siagian at a press conference at the Komnas HAM office.

Komnas HAM Commissioner Prabianto Mukti Wibowo stated that Andrie has consistently conducted human rights protection work through peaceful means. Andrie is also noted as being vulnerable to attacks in his human rights protection efforts.

“And thirdly, he universally accepts human rights in his work,” said Mukti.

“Based on these three classifications or criteria, we then conducted an evaluation of Andrie Yunus,” he added.

Andrie is noted as having written numerous articles and other publications relating to human rights. Under the second criterion, Andrie Yunus frequently receives threats, not only physical but also legal criminalisation. He was previously reported to police for allegedly causing a disturbance during a protest at the revision meeting of the Military Law at the Fairmont Hotel, Jakarta.

Under the third classification, Komnas HAM notes that Andrie has never been involved in any alleged human rights violations on record with Komnas HAM.

“Based on the satisfaction of these three criteria as I have outlined above, Komnas HAM, pursuant to Komnas HAM Regulation Number 5 of 2015, specifically Article 5, has determined and issued a Human Rights Defender Certificate for Andrie Yunus,” Mukti concluded.
