Komnas HAM emphasises transparency in investigation of stray bullet case

The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) of the Republic of Indonesia has emphasised that the investigation and disclosure regarding the case of two civilians hit by stray bullets in Padang, West Sumatra, must be conducted transparently, comprehensively, accountably, and professionally.

“This is vital because the right to security and protection from all forms of violence is guaranteed by law,” stated the Chairperson of Komnas HAM, Anis Hidayah, in Padang on Thursday.

The Chairperson made these remarks after visiting the two victims at dr. Reksodiwiryo Hospital (also known as the Padang Military Hospital). Anis stated that all parties, particularly the government, are obligated to guarantee and provide a sense of security to every citizen, especially since the incident occurred within a university environment where security should be strictly maintained.

Following the visit, she announced that the Komnas HAM West Sumatra representative office will follow up on the case by gathering necessary information and proactively monitoring the handling of the incident. “We will continue to investigate, including examining the detailed chronology of the event,” she added.

During the visit, she noted that the condition of both victims has significantly improved following surgery. The female victim, a student at Padang State University, sustained a bullet wound to her leg, while the male victim suffered an injury to his arm.

Separately, the Rector of Padang State University, Krismadinata, stated that following the incident on Tuesday (2/6) at approximately 17:05, the university immediately deployed an ambulance to transport the victims to a nearby hospital. Both victims underwent a series of surgeries at dr. Reksodiwiryo Hospital on the same day.
