Member of the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), Amiruddin Al-Rahab, visited the Yogyakarta City Police Headquarters on Monday, 18 May 2026, to probe the handling of alleged abuse cases at Little Aresha daycare. Police had previously sealed the daycare following an investigation into child abuse allegations in late April 2026 and currently have 13 staff members detained as suspects.

Amiruddin stated after meeting Yogyakarta City Police Chief Commissioner Eva Guna Pandia, “We want to delve into the legal process regarding the daycare issue (Little Aresha).”

He clarified that the alleged abuse case at Little Aresha does not constitute a severe human rights violation under the law, but is a serious breach of children’s rights that must be processed criminally.

Komnas HAM considers the case falls under child protection criminal law, not severe human rights violations. “If the question is whether this is a severe human rights violation, it is not as defined by law, but rather a violation of children’s rights under the Child Protection Law,” he said.

According to Amiruddin, the pattern of abuse investigated by investigators does not fundamentally differ from general child abuse crimes. Therefore, Komnas HAM urges law enforcement to hold those responsible for managing Little Aresha daycare accountable.

Komnas HAM has fully entrusted the police with the possibility of applying multiple charges to increase the suspects’ sentences. He noted that the police have sufficient legal instruments.

“Existing laws include the Child Protection Law, the Human Rights Law, and the Education Law. The police are adequately equipped to enforce the law,” Amiruddin added.
