Komnas HAM: 30 Per cent Women's Representation Key to Achieving Equality
The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) assesses that the Constitutional Court’s ruling obliging political parties to meet a 30 per cent quota for women’s representation in legislative candidate selections is key to realising equality. “This ruling reflects efforts to ensure human rights continue to be applied, as well as other rights,” said Komnas HAM Chairman Anis Hidayah during a working visit to Padang on Thursday. The Constitutional Court on Monday (25/5) ruled that political parties failing to meet the minimum 30 per cent women’s representation requirement in legislative elections would be barred from participating in the contest. According to Anis, before the issuance of the ruling requiring 30 per cent women’s representation, many women in Indonesia sought opportunities or equal opportunities in the public sphere but encountered obstacles. However, with the Constitutional Court Ruling Number 128/PUU-XXIV/2026, every woman now has greater opportunities and chances, backed by binding legal force. Anis, also known as an activist concerned with the human rights of Indonesian migrant workers, views that the government continues to strive to guarantee equality and the fulfilment of human rights principles for the public.
