Komdigi Uncovers Irregularities in Steam Game Ratings. Here's the Evidence

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has discovered irregularities in game ratings on Steam, as some games are rated inappropriately for their intended audience. For instance, PUBG is rated for ages 3 and above on Steam, whereas it should be for 18+, while the Upin Ipin game is rated 18. “This seems very strange to us and highly irregular,” said Sonny Hendra Sudaryana, Director of Digital Ecosystem Development at the Directorate General of Digital Ecosystem, during a press conference at Komdigi’s office on Tuesday (7/4/2026). To address this, Komdigi is conducting internal and external investigations into the Steam distribution platform to identify the root causes of the problem. Sonny explained that they had communicated with Steam that morning to follow up on the matter. “We have agreed to conduct investigations internally at Komdigi and externally with Steam,” he stated. The IGRS, Indonesia’s game rating system, employs a multi-layered verification mechanism, starting from self-assessment by game developers and self-declaration by developers or publishers. “Therefore, various points of error that occur should be avoidable,” he added. Sonny assured that the ratings previously available on Steam, which caused controversy, have been taken down. Players can now resume normal gameplay. “The current ones have been directly taken down. There are no more irregular and strange ratings; they have been removed by Steam while they conduct their internal investigation,” he said.
