Komdigi Unblocks Reddit in Indonesia with Special Conditions

The Indonesian government has officially normalised access to the social media platform Reddit after the company met several regulatory requirements. The decision was made after the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) conducted an audit and engagement process regarding Reddit’s compliance in controlling illegal content in Indonesia.

Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi, Alexander Sabar, stated that normalisation was granted after the government confirmed Reddit had adjusted its content moderation system, including implementing access restrictions specifically for users in Indonesia.

Based on Komdigi’s findings, Reddit has applied geoblocking for the Indonesian region. The platform has also restricted access to or removed content prohibited under Indonesian law, such as gambling, pornography, and other illegal material.

Despite the restoration of access, Komdigi stressed that Reddit’s obligations are not over. The platform must immediately register its entity as a Private Electronic System Operator (PSE) and ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable regulations in Indonesia.

The government also cautioned that the normalisation of access could be re-evaluated at any time if violations of the agreed terms are discovered. Alexander emphasised that if illegal content becomes accessible again in Indonesia, Komdigi will take action in accordance with the prevailing regulations.
