Jakarta - Leveraging the UNESCO stage, Indonesia continues to strengthen its commitment to maintaining information integrity and enhancing journalist safety amidst the rapid growth of the artificial intelligence industry. This commitment was demonstrated at the 70th Meeting of the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Council of UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. Director General of Public Communication and Media at the Ministry of Communication and Digital, Fifi Aleyda Yahya, stated that current technological developments have fundamentally changed the way society produces, consumes and trusts information. At the meeting, Indonesia attended as Vice Chair of IPDC Group IV and participated in discussions on global media development policy directions, which are now facing disruption from digital technology and artificial intelligence. The forum, opened by UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information Mariya Gabriel and chaired by IPDC Chair Ambassador Kano Takehiro, agreed on a number of strategic steps to strengthen media sustainability, information integrity, environmental journalism and the utilisation of AI. Meanwhile, Deputy Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Indonesia to UNESCO, Satrya Wibawa, assessed that Indonesia’s position as Vice Chair of Group IV provides a strategic opportunity to champion the interests of developing countries, including strengthening journalist capacity and utilising AI for media infrastructure. “As Vice Chair of IPDC Group IV, Indonesia can promote practical steps through strengthening coordination among member states, identifying priority needs in the media sector, enhancing journalist capacity, and ensuring that issues of journalist safety, media literacy and digital transformation become an important part of IPDC’s future work agenda,” he said. “Strengthening the utilisation of AI for Indonesia’s media infrastructure is a very significant issue,” he continued. For Indonesia, these discussions hold significant meaning because the future of media is determined not only by the ability to adapt to technology, but also by the ability to maintain public trust amidst a flood of information and rampant disinformation. Through active involvement in UNESCO IPDC, Indonesia affirms its commitment not only to be a user of technology, but also to contribute to formulating global policy directions that ensure digital transformation proceeds inclusively, responsibly and in the public interest.
