Komdigi States Meta Implements 16-Year Age Limit Across All Its Platforms
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has announced that Meta, the operator of the Instagram, Facebook, and Threads platforms, has implemented access restrictions for users under 16 years old. This policy is seen as a form of compliance with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operators in Child Protection (PP TUNAS). “As of today, we see that Meta has officially changed its community guidelines by setting a minimum age limit of 16 years across all its platforms, namely Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. This has also been conveyed through an official letter we received,” said Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid, on Thursday (9/4/2026). This compliance step was taken following an inspection process that took place early last week. Thus, the government considers that the requested compliance requirements have been met. Nevertheless, the Ministry of Communication and Digital emphasised that the implementation of this policy will continue to be monitored on an ongoing basis. Meta is said to be implementing compliance gradually to ensure all features operate in accordance with the applicable rules. “We have informed Meta that this compliance will be followed by our supervision,” she said. The government stressed the importance of commitment and good faith from digital platform operators in complying with laws in Indonesia, particularly in efforts to protect children in the digital space. “This is a matter of willingness, a matter of intent from large platforms to comply with laws in Indonesia,” she stated.
