Komdigi: Our Task is to Maintain a Healthy Digital Space, Not to Take it to the Legal Realm

Director General of Public Communication and Media at Komdigi, Fifi Aleyda Yahya, stated this during a talkshow on a private television station in Jakarta. Fifi emphasised that the government’s steps stem from the responsibility to protect the digital ecosystem from misleading content. According to Fifi, the circulating video contains elements of hoaxes and slander, necessitating handling within the framework of public protection. “Komdigi has never stated that it will take Mr Amien to the legal realm. Our task is to keep the digital space healthy,” Fifi said in a written statement on Thursday (7/5/2026). Fifi stressed that handling problematic content is carried out through a digital space governance approach, not criminalisation of individuals. The government’s main focus is to ensure the public is not exposed to information that can damage public trust and trigger disinformation. This view was reinforced by Acting Deputy of the Indonesian Communication Agency (Bakom) RI, Kurnia Ramadhana, who reminded of the importance of boundaries in freedom of expression. Kurnia assessed that freedom of opinion should not be used as a reason to spread content that violates someone’s privacy and honour. According to Kurnia, the government also has a responsibility to continuously educate the public. Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Marsyudi Suhud, highlighted the ethical aspect. Marsyudi stated that mixing policy criticism with baseless personal accusations is unjustified, and even from a religious perspective, it is considered haram because it damages an individual’s dignity. On the other hand, Chairman of the DPP of the Ummat Party, Achyar Muttaqin, viewed Amien Rais’s statement as part of freedom of expression in the context of giving advice to leaders. This debate shows the importance of maintaining a balance between freedom of expression and responsibility in conveying information, especially in the digital space which has a broad impact on society.
