Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, stated that the National AI Roadmap is the government’s strategy to encourage the safe and accountable utilisation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to drive Indonesia’s digital economy. The AI roadmap will regulate AI adoption across various sectors and establish ethical principles related to data security and accountability, serving as a tool to measure AI adoption readiness so that Indonesia can achieve technological independence towards Sovereign AI. The government is also promoting the downstreaming and industrialisation of critical minerals to position Indonesia as a player in the global supply chain, which is vital for strengthening the nation’s digital technology sovereignty. Furthermore, the ministry is boosting digital literacy and preparing the digital skills of the domestic workforce to utilise and develop digital technology through the AI Talent Factory programme, enabling its application in sectors such as agriculture, financial services, and healthcare. Amid global economic volatility, the ministry also recognises various challenges in AI technology development, particularly regarding technological mastery, which necessitates strengthening fair collaboration with developed countries.
