Amidst global uncertainty, Indonesia’s digital economy has demonstrated solid resilience. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) Nezar Patria stated that the national digital economy is projected to grow to US$366 billion by 2030. He noted that the e-commerce sector remains a key pillar, with its market value projected to reach US$104 billion by 2026. “Our e-commerce platforms are quite active, and social commerce continues to grow. This is quite reassuring because as part of digital economy growth, it can contribute a significant figure to help overall economic growth,” Nezar said during the CNBC Indonesia Economic Update 2026 on Monday (22/6/2026).

Komdigi has launched a long-term strategy titled “Connected, Growing, and Protected” to support this growth. This year’s focus is strengthening connectivity as the foundation for digital transformation. To date, 4G BTS network coverage has reached 97% of inhabited areas in Indonesia, while fibre optic networks now cover 60% of the archipelago. The ministry is also bolstering satellite services to reach frontier, outermost, and least developed regions (3T), ensuring equitable internet access for communities and businesses.

“All of this is to support connectivity reaching remote areas, the 3T regions, and also to cover areas that require intensive connectivity, especially where economic activity is high. We are trying to improve the quality of service there,” Nezar explained. Additionally, 5G network development is ongoing through collaboration with mobile operators, though penetration currently stands at only 10-11% of total networks. To further enhance connectivity, Komdigi is preparing spectrum auctions for the 700MHz and 2.6GHz bands. The 700MHz spectrum will expand coverage, while the 2.6GHz spectrum aims to strengthen broadband services and provide better speeds for users.

Nezar emphasised that internet speed must be improved evenly across the country. As part of the spectrum auction policy, winning operators will be required to build quality internet networks in 3T regions and Eastern Indonesia. “If they win in Java, they must build in Papua; if they win in another area, they must build in Sumatra, and so on. This creates an obligation and a shared responsibility to accelerate access and improve service quality for all Indonesians,” he concluded.
