Komdigi: Access to Wikimedia in Indonesia to Be Restored, Here Are the Conditions
The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has stated that it will reopen access to Wikimedia services in Indonesia, which were previously restricted. This normalisation will occur after the registration process for Wikimedia as a Private Scope Electronic System Organiser (PSE) is completed and verified. Komdigi’s Director General of Digital Space Supervision, Alexander Sabar, said the government appreciates Wikimedia’s steps in communicating and committing to fulfil these administrative obligations. “We appreciate the communication established by Wikimedia and its commitment to follow up on the PSE registration process, and the normalisation of access to affected services will be carried out after the registration process is verified,” Alexander stated in Central Jakarta on Monday (16/3/2026). The regulation requires every digital platform providing services, processing personal data, and operating in Indonesia to register officially with the government. Alexander emphasised that Wikimedia’s contributions to providing knowledge access to the public are still valued. However, he stated that openness of information must still proceed alongside compliance with applicable laws. “PSE registration is a form of platform accountability to the public, while also ensuring a clear point of contact for technical coordination, handling illegal content, and protecting user rights in Indonesia,” he said. He also stressed that non-profit organisation status does not exempt obligations to comply with regulations, including personal data protection. Currently, Komdigi is still open to communication with the Wikimedia Foundation to accelerate the registration process through the Online Single Submission (OSS) system. This process serves as the basis for the government to evaluate and follow up on the previously imposed access restrictions, including on certain subdomains like auth.wikimedia.org. Komdigi also provides technical assistance services through its official helpdesk to support the registration process. The government stated that this step is part of efforts to maintain a safe, orderly, and trustworthy digital ecosystem, while still supporting open information access for Indonesian society.
