Kodam Jaya Deploys Troops to Aid Police in Mugging Crackdown in Jakarta

Kodam Jaya deploys troops to assist the police in hunting muggers who have recently become rampant in Jakarta and its surroundings.

Kodam Jaya’s Public Affairs Chief, Lt Col Arh. Noor Iskak, stated that one of the TNI’s duties in military operations other than war (OMSP) is to support police operations.

“During patrols, we provide support as requested by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, while legal enforcement against muggers remains the responsibility of the police,” Iskak said when contacted on Monday (25/5).

He explained that the personnel involved in patrols are from the local Kodim units, with additional personnel from various units to bolster patrol strength as per the Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s request.

Previously, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s Muggers Hunting Task Force and regional police stations reported 870 street crimes in Jakarta and surrounding areas during May 2026. Police successfully arrested 173 suspects.

“Jakarta Metropolitan Police and regional police stations have resolved 127 police reports involving 173 suspects,” said Jakarta Metropolitan Police Criminal Investigation Director, Kombes Iman Imanuddin, during a press conference on Friday (22/5).

“Of these, 38 suspects were handled by Jakarta Metropolitan Police and 135 by regional police stations,” he added.

Iman noted that street crimes in Jakarta have been increasing recently, as evidenced by the high number of police reports from the public.

He explained that the police received 1,283 reports within less than a month. Breakdowns include 651 cases of aggravated theft (curat), 396 ordinary thefts, 209 motor vehicle thefts, and 27 cases of theft with violence.
