Kodaeral IX-Wanadri Diving Expedition in Buru Island to Protect Marine Ecosystem
The waters of Maluku, including Buru Island, possess immense biological wealth and maritime history that require sustainable protection and promotion. The Indonesian Navy’s Kodaeral IX Ambon, in collaboration with the Wanadri Women Divers Expedition Team, is conducting a diving expedition in Buru Island, Buru Regency, Maluku, to support the preservation of marine ecosystems and highlight the region’s maritime potential.
“This expedition is a positive step towards strengthening awareness of marine conservation while introducing Maluku’s maritime potential to the wider public,” stated the Commander of Kodaeral IX Ambon, Rear Admiral Hanarko Djodi Pamungkas, in Ambon on Wednesday. According to Hanarko, the waters of Maluku, including Buru Island, hold significant biodiversity and maritime history, necessitating continuous protection and promotion through various exploration and educational activities.
He noted that Kodaeral IX fully supports the expedition, which is scheduled to run until 11 June 2026, as it aligns with efforts to maintain the coastal and marine environment in the Maluku region. Hanarko explained that the collaboration between Kodaeral IX and the Wanadri Team focuses on several conservation programmes in the coastal areas of Buru Island, including coral reef restoration, mangrove rehabilitation, and the empowerment of coastal communities through the ‘Ibu Karang’ (Mother of Coral) programme.
These programmes are expected to increase community awareness regarding the importance of protecting marine ecosystems while supporting the sustainability of coastal resources that sustain local livelihoods. In addition to conservation activities, the expedition also aims to document the underwater potential of Buru Island, which is known for its marine biodiversity and well-preserved coastal areas. “We hope this activity can benefit the environment and the community, while strengthening the spirit of collaboration among various parties in safeguarding Indonesia’s maritime wealth,” he added.
