Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Central Leadership Council (DPP) of the Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) is encouraging youth solidarity to accelerate the recovery of communities affected by floods and landslides in Sumatera, particularly in West Sumatera.

KNPI Chairman Haris Pertama, speaking in Jakarta on Wednesday, stated that young people must be present in communities facing disasters not only in words but also through humanitarian action.

“Indonesian youth must be a social force capable of spreading empathy and mutual cooperation. When communities face disasters, youth must be at the forefront helping the recovery process,” said Haris.

The appeal was made by Haris whilst distributing assistance to hundreds of residents affected by floods and landslides in Punggung Lading Village, Pariaman, West Sumatera, on Tuesday (10 March) as part of KNPI’s Ramadan Outreach programme.

During the activity, KNPI not only provided assistance to disaster-affected residents but also channelled aid to local surau and prayer halls to support community religious activities during Ramadan.

According to Haris, Ramadan provides an opportunity to strengthen social solidarity and humanitarian concern, particularly among the younger generation.

“Ramadan teaches us to share and strengthen empathy. KNPI is present not merely to deliver aid, but also to ensure that communities affected by disaster do not face this situation alone,” said Haris.

Furthermore, he stated that the assistance provided to the prayer hall in Punggung Lading Village also represents an effort to support the social and spiritual life of communities in the post-disaster situation.

The activity in West Sumatera is a continuation of KNPI’s humanitarian Ramadan Outreach programme, which was previously conducted in Aceh with assistance provided to communities affected by flooding.

Through these activities, KNPI hopes that youth solidarity can continue to be strengthened to help communities recover and accelerate the post-disaster recovery process.
