Knowledge Fabrication: The Role of AI in Creating an Intellectual Crisis
At the International Symposium on Pneumococci and Pneumological Diseases (ISPPD), held in Denmark from 17-20 May 2026, three individuals claiming to be researchers presented impressive-looking work. The research utilised sample data from multiple countries, including Peru, Ethiopia, Nepal, and Kenya, using a convincing methodology. However, the absence of local collaborators—a necessity for cross-border data collection—raised suspicions regarding the authenticity of the study. Wa Ode Dwi Diningrat, an Indonesian researcher representing Oxford University, UK, noted several irregularities during the symposium.
These irregularities, as reported by CNBC on 28 May 2026, include highly unusual graphs and data that appeared to be the result of AI fabrication. Furthermore, primary data collection in the Andes highlands of Peru was conducted without any local collaborators, which is nearly impossible given that such involvement is essential for obtaining ethical clearance for international research. Additionally, the identity of the presenters changed inconsistently; a female presenter appeared under different names and even different attire across various presentations. The research posters also stood out suspiciously, as they were printed on simple A4 paper, unlike the professional displays of other researchers.
In addition to Dwi, the fraud was also uncovered by Ida Bagus Mandhara Brasika, a doctoral student in Mathematical Climate at the University of Exeter, UK. Through his social media threads, he revealed that several Indonesians were caught engaging in organised falsification in front of thousands of scientists at the prestigious conference in Copenhagen.
The exposure of this research fraud, allegedly conducted to secure travel grants, has caused significant embarrassment. The Indonesian Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, stated that the Ministry is seriously monitoring potential violations of academic integrity while maintaining a cautious approach, allowing for objective clarification and verification processes. The Ministry has not yet definitively labelled the researchers as fraudsters using AI.
This incident also highlights the growing debate regarding the role of AI in research. While scholars such as Mohammad Hosseini, Maya Murad, and David B. Resnik have noted that scientists use AI for literature reviews, hypothesis formulation, and complex modelling, others like Mohamed Khalifa and Mona Albadawy describe AI as an essential productivity tool for managing complex ideas and academic writing. The benefits of AI include idea generation, content structuring, literature synthesis, and data management. However, as seen in recent academic ‘hackathons’ at the University of Mannheim, the scientific community continues to evaluate whether the quality of AI-assisted articles can meet or exceed the standards required for reputable journals.
