Know the risk factors for kidney cancer, the cancer that afflicted Vidi Aldiano
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The singer Vidi Aldiano died on Saturday, 7 March, after several years of battling kidney cancer.
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, kidney cancer is the tenth most common cancer among men and the thirteenth most common among women.
A press release on the official Cleveland Clinic website states that kidney cancer is a malignant tumour that arises in the kidney, the organ that filters the blood, maintains fluid balance in the body, and eliminates waste.
Kidney cancer occurs when healthy cells mutate into cancer cells that form a tumour.
These changes may occur for unknown reasons, but there are risk factors that can increase the likelihood of developing it.
According to information on the United States National Cancer Institute’s website, risk factors that can increase the likelihood of kidney cancer include smoking and long-term misuse of analgesics.
Other risk factors include being overweight, high blood pressure, having a family history of kidney cancer, and certain genetic conditions such as von Hippel-Lindau disease.
According to the journal, the incidence of kidney cancer in men is about twice that in women.
Kidney cancer may not produce noticeable symptoms until it begins to spread beyond the kidney.
Symptoms may include blood in the urine, fatigue, recurrent fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, pain in the back of the abdomen, and a lump on the side of the body between the ribs and hips.
People experiencing persistent blood in the urine or flank pain are advised to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider to undergo tests to determine the cause.
If test results indicate the appearance of kidney cancer, the healthcare provider will refer the patient to an oncologist for further evaluation.
Treatment of kidney cancer is determined by the stage of the cancer. Treatments for this cancer may include surgery, ablation, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy.
