Fishermen in Bantul Regency, DIY Special Province, are appreciating the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP) programme, conceived by President Prabowo Subianto. The programme, implemented by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, is beginning to deliver benefits to fishermen. ‘I hope this will be useful for the community, especially the fishermen. The fishermen here are very enthusiastic about KNMP,’ said Punijo, one of the local fishermen, when Minister Trenggono inspected KNMP construction in Poncosari Village, Srandakan District, Bantul Regency, in a Jakarta press release on Thursday, 5 March 2026. Punijo noted that Poncosari Village has around 150 fishermen who depend on catching fish at sea. However, he added, the work cannot take place all year round. The southern coast is often beset by large waves that are dangerous to venture out to sea. ‘The obstacle here is the large waves,’ Punijo said. According to him, the fishermen’s catches have been volatile. In lean periods, production drops to about 500 kilograms. But when weather is good and fishing season is underway, catches increase as all fishermen go out to sea. Punijo said he was pleased with the availability of a boat workshop facility for fishermen, as previously maintenance of the engine had to be carried out outside the region up to Cilacap. Now, with the support from the Ministries of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, fishermen can repair their boats themselves. ‘Here it will also be equipped with culinary services,’ he added. In addition, the KNMP will be equipped with ice production and freezers. This will provide a solution for fishermen to store their catches. ‘Thank you Mr President and Mr Minister, this is very beneficial for the fishermen and the surrounding environment,’ Punijo said.
