Knife-Wielding Snatcher Shot by Police During Arrest in Mataram

Police fired live rounds into the right calf of a snatcher identified as IS, alias Cekok. The repeat offender from Karang Pule, Sekarbela District, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), resisted during arrest.

“The suspect resisted, so we subdued him,” said Assistant Director of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Jatanras) of NTB Police, AKBP Catur Erwin Setiawan, on Wednesday (27 May 2026).

Catur stated that Cekok was arrested on suspicion of involvement in multiple snatching incidents across Mataram City. The 23-year-old man was armed with a sharp weapon (sajam) during the crimes.

One of the snatching incidents occurred in front of a workshop in the Sekarbela area of Mataram. According to Catur, Cekok targeted passersby.

“The suspect took a gold bracelet. The victim suffered losses of Rp26 million,” he added.

Additionally, Cekok snatched items from a passerby in Pagutan Barat, Mataram. At that location, he stole two mobile phones from the victim’s motorcycle pocket.

“The suspect cornered the victim and immediately took the two phones from the motorcycle’s storage area,” Catur said.

Catur said Cekok always threatened victims with a sharp weapon during the crimes. After stealing the victims’ belongings, he fled the scene immediately.

Cekok was arrested by police in Jempong, Mataram City, on Tuesday (26 May) evening. He was apprehended following an investigation after officers had previously arrested a receiver of stolen goods.

“The suspect is currently being held at NTB Police Headquarters for further investigation,” he concluded.
