KMP Mutiara Sentosa Catches Fire in Sumenep Carrying 250 Passengers; 9 Vessels Deployed for Evacuation
Several vessels have been deployed to support the evacuation process of passengers and crew from the Passenger Motor Ship (KMP) Mutiara Sentosa 2, which operates on the Surabaya-Makassar route. The ship caught fire in the waters near Sumenep, East Java, on Sunday morning (2/8/2026).
“Based on coordination with joint officers currently moving towards the scene, the incident is located at coordinates 06°30’64” S and 114°00’19” E, approximately in the waters of Sumenep Regency, or about 19 nautical miles north of Sapudi Island,” stated AKP Widiarti, Head of Public Relations for the Sumenep Police.
“There are nine ships deployed to the area to carry out the evacuation,” she added.
The vessels deployed to evacuate the passengers and crew of KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 include KN SAR 249 Permadi, Surabaya SAR Office vessels, Sumenep SAR Post vessels, Surabaya Harbour Master (Syahbandar) vessels, Surabaya VTS, SROP Kalianget, KSOP Kaliwayet, the Meratur Project 3 vessel, and TB Hasnur 26.
The Sumenep SAR Post has also deployed personnel to the site of the fire to assist in the rescue efforts for the passengers.
