KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 Ship Catches Fire, Basarnas Searching for 41 Victims

According to Basarnas data as of Sunday afternoon, the ferry on the Surabaya-Makassar route was carrying a total of 271 passengers and crew members. The ferry fire occurred in the waters off Madura Island, East Java, on Sunday (2/8). The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) reported that at least five people have died, while 41 others remain missing and are currently being searched for.

A total of 225 people were successfully evacuated safely, while the SAR team continues its search for dozens of victims who have not yet been found. The search and rescue operation involves joint SAR elements and is being carried out continuously to accelerate the evacuation of victims at the scene. The ferry was known to be sailing from Surabaya, East Java, towards Makassar, South Sulawesi, when the fire incident occurred on Sunday morning.
