KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 Catches Fire in Madura Waters, Thick Black Smoke Rises into the Air
The KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 vessel caught fire while sailing in the waters of the Madura Islands, East Java, on Sunday, 2 August 2026. The incident occurred while the ship was on a voyage from Surabaya to Makassar.
According to gathered information, the vessel was transporting logistics cargo and was scheduled to arrive in Makassar on Monday, 3 August 2026. However, flames suddenly broke out mid-voyage. As a result of the fire, part of the ship’s hull is reported to have sunk. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
In video footage, dozens of passengers can be seen gathered on the ship’s deck wearing life jackets, as thick black smoke rose high from the burning vessel. Currently, the Surabaya SAR Team is heading to the incident location in the waters of Sumenep Regency, Madura, to carry out the evacuation process.
“Hopefully, all Persons on Boat (POB) can be evacuated safely and securely,” wrote the Surabaya SAR officer.
As of the time of publication, there has been no official statement from the KM Mutiara Sentosa 2 management or Basarnas regarding the cause of the fire, the number of passengers, or the condition of the victims in this incident.
