KLIA Staff Suspected of Aiding Co-pilot in Drug Smuggling to Indonesia

Kepolisian Malaysia (PDRM) has identified a staff member or officer at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) suspected of involvement in the case of co-pilot Mohd Saufi bin Othman, who allegedly attempted to smuggle drugs on a flight to Indonesia. The staff member is believed to have assisted the operation.

Director of the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID), Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, stated that the individual would soon be summoned to provide a statement. “The individual is among the staff involved in checks at KLIA. We will investigate to obtain a statement, and if proven, we will make an arrest,” Hussein said, as reported by Bernama on Tuesday.

Hussein said preliminary investigations have so far revealed that Mohd Saufi bin Othman obtained the drugs at an apartment in Ampang, Malaysia. Checks also indicated that the suspect arrived at KLIA in the morning and checked in a bag containing the drugs before leaving it at the airport and flying to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. After returning from Kinabalu, Mohd Saufi bin Othman collected the suitcase containing ecstasy and then departed for Jakarta with the luggage.

Hussein added that his party is currently awaiting information from the Indonesian National Police to enable them to send personnel to Indonesia to assist in providing statements. Previously, Indonesian Customs arrested the Malaysian co-pilot, Mohd Saufi bin Othman, for carrying 70,114 ecstasy pills weighing 26 kg. He attempted to smuggle the ecstasy through Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten.
