KLH to Build Waste Management System in Makassar in 2027
Makassar – The Governor of South Sulawesi, Andi Sudirman Sulaiman, revealed that the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLH) had announced Makassar as one of nine cities in Indonesia set to receive a programme this year to develop a waste management system. Accordingly, Andi Sudirman urged the Makassar City Environmental Service (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup Kota Makassar) to prepare all documents and requirements thoroughly. He said that a colour-based waste segregation campaign could be an effective solution in fostering public habits. ‘Our community must become accustomed to campaigns that show which colour corresponds to which waste. For example, green for recyclable or organic waste, yellow for certain types, red for dangerous,’ he said. He noted that such a practice has long been implemented in several countries, so residents can easily recognise the type of waste just by looking at the colour of the bin. ‘When you see it, you remember it immediately, because we are used to it every day,’ he added. He assessed that Makassar’s position as a hub in Eastern Indonesia makes the development of a waste management system in this city very important. Nevertheless, he reminded the regional government to ensure all readiness criteria are met so that the programme can be realised by the central government.
