KLH seals factory waste pipe suspected of polluting Porong River, East Java
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has sealed the wastewater discharge pipe belonging to PT Mega Surya Eratama in the Porong River, Mojokerto Regency, East Java, as a rapid response to public complaints regarding river pollution.
Head of the Law Enforcement Centre (Gakkum) of KLH Surabaya, Arief Hilman Arda, in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday, said the Supervisory Team of the Environmental Law Enforcement Centre (BPHLH) for the Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara regions, together with the Environmental Agency (DLH) of Mojokerto Regency, conducted field verification with sampling of wastewater and water bodies on 22 and 23 July 2026.
“Based on test results of samples taken by the Supervisory Team and DLH of Mojokerto Regency, water quality parameters were found to exceed the required quality standards. This finding is an important part of the verification process for suspected environmental pollution due to wastewater discharge into the Porong River,” said Arief Hilman Arda.
Laboratory test results proved that a number of water quality parameters exceeded the permitted quality standards. These critical parameters include high Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), the number of pollution indicator bacteria (Total Coliform), as well as exposure to oil and grease.
The sealing ensures that the source of wastewater discharge potentially polluting the Porong River can be halted while the handling of the suspected violation is ongoing.
All verification results, sampling, laboratory testing, and cessation measures, he said, are part of the environmental law enforcement process in accordance with statutory provisions.
“Every business activity is obliged to ensure that wastewater management and disposal is carried out in accordance with statutory provisions and does not cause environmental pollution. For suspected violations found, we will take follow-up action in accordance with our authority and applicable legal provisions,” explained Ardyanto.
He affirmed the commitment of KLH/BPLH to continue strengthening supervision and carrying out firm and measured environmental law enforcement against any party proven to have committed violations and caused impacts on environmental quality.
Through this measure, KLH/BPLH ensures that efforts to protect the Porong River and its surrounding environment continue, while encouraging all business actors to carry out their activities in accordance with the principles of compliance and environmental sustainability.
