The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has deployed teams to the site of the Jatiwaringin landfill fire in Tangerang Regency, Banten. They are monitoring air quality conditions and the subsequent impact on the local community.

The KLH officials deployed to the location include the Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement, the Deputy for Pollution and Environmental Damage Control, and the Deputy for Waste, Hazardous, and Toxic Substance Management (PSLB3).

“We understand the public’s concerns, particularly regarding the impact of smoke and the decline in air quality. As a form of rapid response, KLH/BPLH has deployed technical teams to the site to conduct field verification, oversee the mitigation process, and ensure that handling proceeds according to safety protocols,” according to an official statement from the KLH/Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Public Relations Bureau, as reported by Antara on Thursday (2/7/2026).

Air quality monitoring results by the KLH show that PM2.5 concentrations are in the dangerous category, with values exceeding 1,000 micrograms per cubic metre. Consequently, the KLH is restricting access to certain areas for public safety.

Suspected Fire Due to Hot Weather

The KLH stated that preliminary suspicions suggest the fire was triggered by hot weather conditions, which caused hotspots to appear within the waste piles and subsequently spread. The firefighting process requires specialised handling because the height of the waste piles reaches approximately 20-30 metres.

The KLH stated that the exact cause of the fire will be investigated once the emergency situation is brought under control. As a preventive measure, the Minister of Environment/Head of BPLH has issued Circular Letter Number 11 of 2026 concerning Preparedness and Anticipation of Fires at Landfill Sites (TPA) during Extreme Hot Weather, serving as a guideline for all local governments to increase readiness.

The KLH team also ensured that the handling process is proceeding optimally. They have coordinated with the Banten Provincial Government, Tangerang Regency Government, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Ministry of Forestry, the TNI, the National Police, and all relevant agencies.

In the statement, the KLH/BPLH also expressed appreciation to the Tangerang Regency Fire Department for their work since the onset of the incident, as well as to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) for strengthening the firefighting operations through personnel support and water bombing.
