KLH Inspects Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire Site, Monitors Air Quality

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has deployed teams to the site of the fire at the Jatiwaringin Landfill (TPA) in Tangerang Regency, Banten, and is continuously monitoring air quality conditions and the impact on the community.

“We understand the public’s concerns, particularly regarding the impact of smoke and the decline in air quality. As a form of rapid response, KLH/BPLH has deployed technical teams to the location to conduct field verification, oversee the mitigation process, and ensure that handling proceeds according to safety protocols,” according to an official statement from the KLH/Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Public Relations Bureau confirmed in Jakarta on Thursday.

KLH has ensured that the Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement, the Deputy for Pollution and Environmental Damage Control, and the Deputy for Waste, Hazardous, and Toxic Substance Management (PSLB3) have personally inspected the site. This follows the directives of the Minister of Environment/Head of BPLH, Moh Jumhur Hidayat.

The KLH team is also ensuring that handling is optimal and is strengthening coordination with the Banten Provincial Government, the Tangerang Regency Government, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Ministry of Forestry, the TNI, the Police, and all relevant agencies.

In the statement, the KLH/BPLH also expressed appreciation to the Tangerang Regency Fire Department, which has been working since the start of the incident, as well as to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) for strengthening firefighting operations through personnel support and water bombing.

KLH/BPLH has confirmed that continuous monitoring of air quality around the location is being conducted. Monitoring results show that PM2.5 concentrations are in the dangerous category, with values exceeding 1,000 micrograms per cubic metre, leading to restricted access to certain areas for public safety.

KLH stated that the preliminary suspicion is that the fire was triggered by hot weather conditions, which caused fire spots to appear within the waste piles and subsequently spread.

Given that the height of the waste piles reaches approximately 20-30 metres, the firefighting process requires specialised handling. The exact cause will be investigated once the emergency situation has been brought under control.

As a preventive measure, the Minister of Environment/Head of BPLH has issued the Ministry of Environment Circular Letter Number 11 of 2026 regarding Preparedness and Anticipation of Landfill Fires during Extreme Hot Weather conditions, serving as a guideline for all local governments to increase readiness.
